Gym ABC is a beginner's introduction to the gym: machines, free weights, the warm-up and how a session is structured. A gym trainer shows how to adjust a machine to your measurements and in what order to do the exercises, so that you do not have to wander around lost the first time.
The basic movements, such as the squat, the pull, the press and lifting with a barbell, are usually learned first with a light weight. The trainer checks your position and range of motion and sets a weekly plan that also leaves time for recovery. The trainer also explains why the order of exercises matters and when to add weight.
A private trainer in the gym can also help you put together a plan of your own if you later decide to continue alone. Before you start, ask whether the plan is given in writing, whether sessions take place in a gym that is convenient for you to reach and whether the trainer also goes through the gym's safety rules.
