Powerlifting, jõutõstmine in Estonian, consists of three lifts: the squat, the bench press and the deadlift. A powerlifting coach teaches the technique of each lift, from stance and grip to breathing and the path of the bar. Unlike bodybuilding, the aim is to lift as much weight as possible rather than to shape muscles.
A training plan in powerlifting is periodised: the load and the number of repetitions change from week to week so that progress continues and the body adapts. The coach helps choose accessory exercises that strengthen a weak link and watches that technique does not break down under heavy weight.
When preparing for a meet, the order of the competition is also practised: each lift has three attempts and referees judge the technique. Ask the powerlifting coach whether they have competed themselves and whether they teach technique to a beginner who is not yet thinking about competing.
