Rowing (2)

Rowing is a whole-body endurance sport in which the power comes from the legs, travels through the back and finishes with the arms. A rowing coach teaches the stroke rhythm, a smooth recovery and how to keep the boat balanced. Beginners often start on a rowing machine, where technique is easier to watch and correct.

On the water you train in single or crew boats, so you also learn to row in a team and hold a shared rhythm. The season depends on the weather: in summer you are out on a river or lake, in winter training moves indoors to the rowing machine, strength and mobility work. Rowing suits young athletes who want to race as well as adults looking for varied endurance training.

Before choosing a club or coach, ask where the boats and boathouse are, whether equipment is provided and whether there is a separate beginners' group. Also find out whether a safety boat always accompanies water sessions and whether you need to pass a swimming test before going out.
