A boxing coach teaches the fundamentals: stance, footwork, straight punches, hooks and uppercuts, and defence including blocks and slips. A boxing session starts with movement, not heavy hitting, because footwork determines the accuracy and balance of a punch.
There are two ways to do boxing, depending on whether you want to stay in shape or compete. Fitness boxing uses boxing exercises, a heavy bag and focus mitts without fighting an opponent. Competitive boxing adds sparring and preparation for a bout, where the coach watches technique, defence and weight class requirements.
When agreeing on a boxing coach, ask whether they work with beginners, what level the group is and whether sparring starts right away or only later. Also find out whether the club provides gloves and hand wraps for the first sessions or you need to get them yourself.
